The technical moat is gone

When anyone can ship software in a weekend, what protects a company?

We started SLIT as a team that shipped fast. B2C apps, developer tools, client work, AI transformation projects. We were good at it. A product in two weeks. A client site in one.

Then we noticed something uncomfortable. Everyone else was getting fast too.

AI made building cheap. The thing we were proud of, speed, was turning into a commodity. A clean UI stopped being a moat around the time every tool could generate one. If we could rebuild a competitor’s product in a weekend, so could anyone rebuild ours.

So we asked the question every team building with AI has to answer eventually. What’s left when code is free?

We looked at who was building durable companies. Tax accountants starting tax software. Lawyers starting legal software. Doctors starting clinical tools. They weren’t faster than anyone. They knew something the rest of us didn’t.

We didn’t have a domain like that. So we went looking for one. We interviewed people in hospitals, law firms and professional services. We kept going deeper until we found work that was hard, regulated, full of judgment, and badly served by software: unsecured debt collection.

Nobody dreams of building for collections. That’s the point.

The moat we want isn’t in the code. It’s in the thousand small judgments a good collector makes every day, learned at the desk and written into an agent. You can copy an interface. You can’t copy a year of doing the work.
