In my words

01 I wanted to be an actor first

In middle school I told everyone I would go to Hollywood and become the best actor in the world. Not a star. The best. In high school that dream ended, and for a few months I had nothing to aim at.

Then I watched an interview with Elon Musk after his third failed rocket launch. Asked whether he had ever thought about giving up, he answered in less than a second: “Never. I never give up.” I decided that was the life I wanted.

02 I dropped out to get in

In June of my second year of high school I left school to study for the college entrance exam on my own. I started from the bottom and studied thirteen to fifteen hours a day. It was the happiest I had been.

I ended up in Physics at Sungkyunkwan University. I did not retake the exam for another school. I had a feeling that college was not the whole story, and that there was too much to try.

03 A physics major who couldn’t code

I wanted to build software, so I asked developer friends to build it with me. I asked dozens of times. The answer was always the same: “Why don’t you just do it yourself?”

So I did. Python, then JavaScript, then React, then the backend. The terminal scared me. Then one night an error finally went away at five in the morning, and I was hooked.

04 Results are the only argument

Someone once told me every choice is judged after the fact. If I had dropped out and ended up somewhere worse, people would have called it reckless. If I leave school to build a company and it works, they will say I was always going to. If it fails, they will say I never should have tried.

So I stopped arguing. You prove a choice by what it produces. It is a cruel game, and a simple one.

05 Why we went to the desk

Building fast stopped being enough. When anyone can ship an app in a weekend, the moat is how deeply you understand a hard piece of work.

So we went into a collection office and did the job ourselves, case by case, before asking software to do any of it. Recova is what we learned there.

06 Live the real one

I can’t find the line between work and life anymore, and I don’t want to. My hobby, my rest and my work are the same thing.

The dream is a company that changes something for a lot of people. The dream is what keeps me moving. The work is what I get to do every day.
